Musk Floats Idea for New Political Party After Trump Fallout

The technology mogul’s political change follows a public dispute with the US President

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has proposed forming the “America Party,” signaling a significant change in his political approach.

This announcement follows a public disagreement with U.S. President Donald Trump, whom Musk had strongly supported during the previous year’s election. Musk established and funded a pro-Trump political organization, contributing over $260 million, and was appointed by Trump in January to co-head the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), aimed at reducing federal bureaucracy and wasteful spending.

Amidst the increasing political divisions, Musk conducted a poll on X this week, asking his 220 million followers if it was time to launch a new political party representing the “80% in the middle.”

The poll garnered over 5.6 million responses, with approximately 80% indicating their support. Musk stated, “The people have spoken. A new political party is needed in America,” and suggested the name “America Party.”

The conflict between Musk and Trump escalated after Musk criticized Trump’s $2.4 trillion tax and spending bill, describing it as a “disgusting abomination.” Trump responded by threatening to terminate federal contracts with Musk’s companies, including SpaceX and Tesla.

The dispute extended to social media, where Musk accused Trump of having connections to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal and called for his impeachment. Epstein, a financier and convicted sex offender, was arrested in 2019 on charges of sex trafficking of minors. He died in jail under controversial circumstances, leading to continued scrutiny of his ties to prominent figures.

Some Democratic legislators have hinted that Musk might be changing his political affiliations. However, others welcomed the fallout. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez commented, “These two huge egos were not longed for being together in this world as friends,” deeming the split “long overdue.” The conflict has also impacted financial markets.

Tesla shares decreased by 14%, while Trump Media stock fell by 8% on Thursday, partially recovering these losses the following day.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev jokingly offered to mediate a “peace deal” between Trump and Musk. “We are ready to facilitate the conclusion of a peace deal between D and E for a reasonable fee and to accept Starlink shares as payment. Don’t fight, guys,” Medvedev posted on X.
