The altercation occurred amidst widespread demonstrations demanding the release of Istanbul’s mayor from police custody.
Supporters of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who is currently detained, attempted to breach a security barrier set up by police inside a courthouse on Sunday.
Opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) lawmakers clashed with officers and dismantled a barricade in the lobby.
CHP MP Cemal Enginyurt stated that the authorities, by establishing barricades, were “depriving legislators of their right to meet with their colleagues and greet Ekrem Imamoglu.”
Imamoglu was previously brought to the courthouse, where a judge is expected to decide on the prosecution’s request for his arrest on charges of corruption and terrorism.
The CHP has urged people to disregard a ban on rallies in Istanbul and protest in the streets. Significant demonstrations took place in Istanbul, Ankara, and other major cities on Saturday. In some cases, water cannons and tear gas were used to disperse the crowds.

Imamoglu, who was a vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election, was detained on Wednesday.
Prosecutors claim he accepted bribes and aided the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which is a designated terrorist organization in Türkiye. The mayor has refuted these allegations, maintaining his innocence and asserting that the charges are politically motivated.
