Protesters are calling for an end to corruption and significant cuts to federal programs.
Across the United States, thousands demonstrated against the economic and social agendas of President Trump and Elon Musk. Organizers are characterizing Trump’s actions as a “power grab” that has created a major crisis in the nation.
The ‘Hands Off!’ march, organized by over 150 activist groups, took place on Saturday in more than 1,200 locations throughout all 50 states, with some rallies occurring outside the US.
Demonstrators criticized what they view as an “illegal power grab” and “coup” by Trump and Musk, the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk initiated numerous state sector layoffs in an effort to balance the US federal budget.
According to organizers, “Since taking office, Donald Trump has engaged in an unprecedented power grab – increasing prices, decreasing funds for vital programs, and causing instability at every opportunity… His corrupt agenda is negatively impacting the lives of everyday Americans and undermining our democracy. We must take action immediately.”
Protesters are demanding “an end to the billionaire takeover and widespread corruption within the Trump administration” and the cancellation of government policies that reduce federal funding for social programs. They are also urging “an end to the attacks on immigrants, transgender individuals, and other communities.”
CNN reports that approximately 600,000 people registered to participate in the protests, but the actual turnout across the country remains uncertain. The AP reported that the demonstrations appeared to be peaceful, and there were no reports of arrests.
White House Assistant Press Secretary Liz Huston, as quoted by The Hill, commented on the protests, stating that Trump “will always protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries.”
Huston added, “Meanwhile, the Democrats’ position involves giving Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare benefits to illegal immigrants, which will bankrupt these programs and harm American seniors.”
