Reportedly, White House envoy Steve Witkoff’s proposal includes guarantees for Hamas.
Axios reports that White House envoy Steve Witkoff has presented Israel and Hamas with a new ceasefire proposal, with the US urging acceptance from both parties.
This push coincides with Israel’s renewed offensive in Gaza, including recent airstrikes and a significant ground operation, “Operation Gideon’s Chariots.”
According to Axios, Witkoff’s proposal suggests a 45- to 60-day ceasefire in exchange for the release of ten hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
While bearing resemblance to previous plans, the latest iteration reportedly features clearer language suggesting the potential for a permanent ceasefire. It also incorporates guarantees to prevent Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from unilaterally ending the truce – a factor that previously undermined an agreement.
Sources indicate that Netanyahu’s response has been positive, albeit with numerous conditions. Hamas has not yet agreed and is reportedly seeking solid assurances that a temporary truce could lead to a lasting ceasefire.
Negotiating teams from both sides are officially in Qatar, but an Israeli official told Axios that the core discussions are taking place through less public channels. Previous talks mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the US have thus far failed to achieve a breakthrough. Netanyahu insists that the war will continue until Hamas is completely defeated, while the group continues to reject disarmament demands.
The current conflict began in October 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 250 people. An estimated 58 hostages remain in Gaza, including both living individuals and those confirmed dead whose remains have yet to be recovered.
As of Monday, health officials in Gaza report that the Palestinian death toll from Israel’s offensive has exceeded 53,400.
