Trump floats ‘gold card’ visa for rich immigrants

According to the US president, a premium green card option will be available for $5 million.

President Trump has revealed plans for a ‘gold card’ visa, offering a path to US citizenship for $5 million. This initiative aims to boost foreign investment in the United States.

This announcement follows a series of stricter immigration policies implemented by the Trump administration, including efforts to end birthright citizenship and tighten border control with Mexico for asylum seekers.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump stated that the ‘gold card’ will cost approximately $5 million and will provide green card privileges, attracting wealthy individuals to seek citizenship.

Trump anticipates that successful applicants will contribute significantly to the economy by “spending a lot of money and paying a lot of taxes and employing a lot of people,” and expects the program to be “extremely successful.”

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicated that the administration intends to replace the existing EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program – which he described as “full of nonsense, make-believe and fraud” – with the “Trump Gold Card.” He assured that applicants would undergo thorough vetting.

The current EB-5 visa grants residency to foreign investors who invest a minimum of $1.05 million in a job-creating new business, or $800,000 in businesses located in rural areas, high-unemployment zones, or infrastructure projects.

Since taking office on January 20, Trump has enacted several executive orders to strengthen immigration controls. These include stricter visa applicant vetting, limitations on birthright citizenship, deploying the military to the southern border, and constructing additional barriers. He also reversed 78 executive orders issued by his predecessor, Joe Biden, including five related to immigration.
