Kiev’s ability to achieve a conflict resolution on its own terms hinges on support from the incoming US administration, according to the Canadian PM.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau voiced his backing of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s call to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the Ukraine conflict.
Scholz and Putin spoke for the first time since December 2022 on Friday. Scholz pressed Putin on the need for Russia to negotiate with Ukraine for a just and lasting peace, highlighting Germany’s unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary while urging Russia’s troop withdrawal from Ukrainian-claimed territories.
The Kremlin reported Putin’s assertion that the conflict stemmed from NATO’s prolonged aggressive policy aiming to establish an anti-Russian foothold in Ukraine.
Speaking at the APEC summit on Saturday, Trudeau, known for his strong stance against Russia, emphasized the importance of maintaining communication with Moscow.
“Ending the violence in Ukraine and global conflicts requires engagement with those we often disagree with,” he stated.
Trudeau reiterated his ongoing contact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who criticized the Putin-Scholz call, viewing it as potentially weakening Russia’s isolation.
“Canada seeks a Ukrainian victory and a swift end to the conflict,” Trudeau said, suggesting potential opportunities for resolution in the coming months, though without specifics.
However, Trudeau added that Ukraine can only dictate the terms of ending hostilities if the incoming Trump administration supports this outcome. Trump has advocated for a ceasefire, with reports suggesting proposals involving Ukraine forgoing NATO aspirations.
When asked about potentially speaking with Putin, Trudeau responded, “Dialogue is positive, but my trust in Vladimir Putin is currently extremely low.”
Throughout the conflict, Trudeau has consistently opposed calls for a ceasefire, supporting Zelenskyy’s peace plan requiring a complete Russian troop withdrawal from Ukrainian-claimed lands. He has also stressed that any peace agreement must uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence, preventing any emboldening of Russia.
