South African ex-police chief has tissue stuck to forehead while sweating during corruption inquiry

(SeaPRwire) –   An unexpected moment briefly diverted attention during testimony at a significant South African corruption inquiry on Tuesday, as a suspended police chief was seen with a piece of tissue adhered to his forehead.

The awkward incident occurred while Julius Mkhwanazi, formerly the deputy chief of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department, was giving evidence before the Madlanga Commission.

Mkhwanazi, who was suspended in November 2025 following allegations of misconduct, had been dabbing sweat from his face after responding to questions from the commission.

However, a portion of the tissue remained stuck to his forehead.

The oversight was quickly noticed. Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga paused the proceedings as attendees observed the situation.

“Oh, you have a tissue stuck on your forehead,” Madlanga remarked to the former police chief.

“I’m sweaty,” Mkhwanazi responded. “Thank you, thank you.”

The Madlanga Commission is a public investigation examining claims of corruption and political interference within South Africa’s justice system. The ongoing inquiry has been hearing from current and former law enforcement officials.

Mkhwanazi has been under scrutiny since an internal audit recommended his suspension as part of a wider investigation into alleged misconduct.
