Sister-in-law splashes bride with black paint moments before wedding in revenge attack

(SeaPRwire) –   For nearly two years, a British bride has struggled with depression and unemployment after being soaked in black paint by her malicious sister-in-law. This assault took place just moments before she was due to walk down the aisle to marry her childhood sweetheart, marking the peak of a revenge plot during a long-running family dispute.

Gemma Monk, 35, a mother of two, anticipated marrying her current husband, Ken Monk, in May 2024. As she walked alongside her father on a cream carpet at the Maidstone, England venue, someone shouted her name. Shortly thereafter, she was covered in black paint, according to an interview she gave to Kent Online on Friday.

Upon recognizing the assailant as her sister-in-law, Antonia Eastwood—who is wed to Gemma’s elder brother, Ashley—Gemma seized her by the hair. However, Eastwood escaped. The bride was left devastated and weeping.

“This has dramatically affected my life,” Monk stated to Kent Online on Wednesday, following Eastwood’s sentencing for two counts of criminal damage by a UK court. “Even when giving my statement at the police station, I became incredibly emotional and broke down while discussing the event.

“Since the event, if not for my kids and family, I doubt I would even get out of bed to look after myself,” she continued. “I have forfeited all my dignity and positive life habits. I have lost my former self. This transformed the happiest day of my life into the most traumatic memory—one I will never forget, nor will my family.”

The assault happened after Monk had shed a considerable amount of weight due to a cancer scare. Although she has since been declared healthy, Monk noted that her sister-in-law was aware of her medical battle at the time but “still chose to destroy the most significant day of my life and endanger me.”

Eastwood, 49, had been prohibited from attending the wedding due to a feud originating from her own marriage ceremony, where Monk was alleged to have “attempted to trip” Eastwood.

In court, Eastwood received a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and was mandated to complete 160 hours of community service.

“This was intended to be a special occasion for Gemma Monk and her family. Thanks to your behavior, it became a nightmare,” Judge Oliver Saxby remarked to Eastwood prior to sentencing.

Eastwood’s spouse, Ashley, was formerly Ken Monk’s closest friend and was the one who introduced him to Gemma when she was just 14 years old.

Despite the attack, Gemma washed the paint off her face and body in the dressing room and borrowed a dress brought by an usher to proceed with marrying her partner of over two decades.

“We had anticipated that day for such a long time. Nothing was going to prevent me,” she said. “I didn’t hesitate; I would have walked down the aisle in my underwear with black paint on my face if necessary.”

However, Monk, a mental health professional, has subsequently battled depression and has been unable to return to work. In a court statement, she expressed that the incident altered her perspective on life and “caused me to wonder if I had done something terrible, if I was in the wrong.”

The pair also cancelled a scheduled honeymoon to the Maldives because Gemma “wasn’t up for it.”

“I had an instinct—a bad feeling that something was amiss—when I stepped out of the car with my dad,” Monk said. “But he assumed it was just nerves.”

“I will never accept her apology,” she added. “I felt the sentence was too lenient. She should have gotten at least 23 months considering the wait we endured to bring this to court.”
