Pope Francis hospitalized for bronchitis treatment

The Holy See Press Office reports that the Pope is receiving treatment for bronchitis.

Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Friday for treatment of a respiratory infection following a recent bronchitis diagnosis, according to the Holy See Press Office. The 88-year-old pontiff underwent examinations and began hospital treatment after his bronchitis worsened. The Vatican described his condition as stable, with mild fever.

Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office, said the Pope is calm and in good spirits.

His hospitalization follows a busy schedule, including a meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

This is Pope Francis’ fifth hospitalization at Gemelli since his election in 2013, prompting ongoing health concerns. Previous hospital stays included colon surgery in 2021, hernia repair in 2023, and treatment for recurring respiratory problems stemming from past pleurisy and a partial lung removal. He also experiences mobility issues due to chronic sciatica and knee problems, often requiring a wheelchair or cane.

All papal engagements have been canceled until at least Monday, February 17, including a Saturday audience, Sunday Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, and a Monday visit to Rome’s Cinecitta film studios.

Despite these challenges, Pope Francis continues to perform his duties and has indicated a willingness to resign if his health prevents him from fulfilling his responsibilities. In his January 2025 autobiography, “Hope,” he stated, “I am well,” adding, “The Church is governed using the head and the heart, not the legs.”

Gemelli Hospital has a long history of providing care to popes, including Pope John Paul II, who was treated there multiple times, including after a 1981 assassination attempt.
