A recent survey indicates that almost 60% of Americans have a negative view of the billionaire’s position within Donald Trump’s administration.

According to a new poll by ABC News, the Washington Post, and Ipsos, most Americans disapprove of Elon Musk’s performance in his role within the US government. Musk recently announced his intention to reduce his involvement as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

ABC News reported on Monday that 57% of those polled disapprove of Musk’s performance in the administration under Donald Trump, while 35% approve. The outlet highlighted that opposition to the administration’s efforts to downsize the federal government, led by DOGE, is a major factor contributing to the negative ratings.

In recent months, the White House, through DOGE, has implemented widespread cuts to federal spending. Since the department’s establishment by Trump shortly after taking office in January, approximately 280,000 federal employees have reportedly been laid off as part of efforts to balance the US federal budget.

Earlier this month, thousands of Americans protested across the country against what they called an “illegal power grab” and “coup” by Trump and Musk, alleging that the economic and social policies implemented by the president and his ally have pushed the country into a significant crisis.

Last week, Musk announced he would be reducing his involvement as head of DOGE to concentrate on his business ventures, stating that the “major work” of establishing the department was complete. However, the world’s wealthiest individual clarified that he does not intend to completely withdraw from government work and will continue to dedicate “a day or two per week to government matters.”

Musk’s time as a special government employee is expected to end around late May, after which he is expected to shift his focus back to his private ventures, including Tesla, the rocket company SpaceX, and the social media platform X, among others.
