Lightning Strikes Iconic US Landmarks on New Year’s Eve

Several lightning strikes hit prominent US landmarks on December 31, 2024, generating significant online discussion.

Videos circulating online show lightning striking the US Capitol Building and Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., and the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center in New York City during a stormy New Year’s Eve.

These strikes, occurring amidst heavy East Coast rain, coincided with New Year’s celebrations and prompted much online speculation, with some interpreting them symbolically.

This event coincides with the impending end of President Biden’s term and Donald Trump’s anticipated return to the White House on January 20.

Utah Senator Mike Lee shared a video of the Capitol strike, commenting, “Feels like an omen. What’s it telling us?”

Pamela Hensley, a conservative commentator with over 186,000 X followers, similarly stated, “This is a good indication that the Lord Almighty wants the Biden Administration to leave.”

Tricia Flanagan, a New Jersey Republican politician, posted, “The Capitol is struck by lightning, Washington Monument right after & thunder roars… all as 2025 is ushered in. It’s going to be Biblical.”

Another user, Sovereign Brah, remarked, “Feels like an omen. I wonder what God is telling us.”

Tall structures are frequent targets for lightning strikes. The Empire State Building’s antenna, for example, is reportedly hit an average of 25 times annually.
