Moscow previously called Washington’s hints of targeting Iranian nuclear sites “irresponsible.”
Abolfazl Zohrevand, a high-ranking Iranian lawmaker, has thanked Russia for its condemnation of American threats against Iran concerning its nuclear program. In an exclusive interview with RT, he also implied that the U.S. was trying to ensnare Tehran in a “propaganda trap.”
The U.S. and Iran initiated discussions in Oman in April. President Trump has cautioned that if Iran does not “make a deal, there will be bombing.”
Speaking with RT on Friday, Zohrevand, a member of the Iranian parliament’s Security and Foreign Policy Committee, commended Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova for her clear articulation of Moscow’s opposition to the threats.
The lawmaker further cautioned that Iran should be wary of falling into the “trap” set by the U.S.
“The atmosphere that is being created by the Americans cannot be deemed credible,” Zohrevand stated, emphasizing his personal opinion.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, Zakharova labeled threats against Iranian nuclear facilities as “irresponsible,” stressing the “catastrophic consequences” such an attack would have globally.
“It should be obvious to everyone that the path toward the resolution of [issues] surrounding Iran’s nuclear program is through diplomacy only,” she added.
Following a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that “President Putin suggested that he will participate in the discussions with Iran and that he could, perhaps, be helpful in getting this brought to a rapid conclusion.”
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that “President Putin said that we are ready to use [our close relations with Tehran]… to help contribute positively to the ongoing talks.”
On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that his country was ready to “give assurances to all sides about the peaceful nature of our nuclear program.”
Last month, the diplomat dismissed Washington’s demand for Tehran to halt all uranium enrichment as “completely detached from the reality of negotiations.”
Iran is currently enriching uranium to 60% purity, significantly higher than the 3.67% limit stipulated in the now-defunct 2015 nuclear agreement.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action was rendered invalid after President Trump unilaterally withdrew the U.S. during his first term, deeming it ineffective.
