Ukraine’s President noted in a post on X that Ukraine seeks 30, 40, or even 50 years of security guarantees from the U.S., and that former President Donald Trump stated the U.S. would consider this.
Zelenskyy held a meeting with Trump in Florida on Sunday, as his country continues to be engaged in a lethal, long-running war against Russia, with the U.S. administration seeking to aid in brokering peace.
In a Monday post on X, the president of the embattled Eastern European country stated that Trump had “confirmed robust security guarantees” during their discussion.
“He verified the details that our negotiating teams had worked out so far regarding these security guarantees, and he confirmed they would be submitted to a vote by the U.S. Congress. This is a very solid agreement,” Zelenskyy stated.
During a joint press conference with Zelenskyy on Sunday, Trump was asked if he had provided any pledges or security assurances for Ukraine.
“I did. We want to collaborate with Europe,” Trump replied, noting that Europe will “take on a significant portion of it” but the U.S. will offer support.
In another Monday post on X, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine desires multi-decade security guarantees from the U.S.
“The documents outline the guarantees for 15 years, with an option for extension. I brought this matter to the President’s attention. I informed him that our war has already persisted for over a decade, so we strongly wish the guarantees to be longer-term. We want to explore the possibility of 30, 40, or 50 years. That would make it a historic decision by President Trump. The President said the U.S. would consider this,” the foreign leader wrote in the post.
Digital contacted the on Monday for comment, though they did not respond promptly.
