Zelenskyy Accuses Russia of Playing Games with Trump to Delay Peace Talks

KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of attempting “to play with the president of the United States” as a tactic to stall American-mediated efforts to conclude the war.

During an interview in Kyiv, Zelenskyy refuted assertions from President Donald Trump that Ukraine is the party obstructing peace.

“We have always been in favor of peace,” Zelenskyy stated. “When you are in your home, on your land, in your city, naturally you want the conflict to end.” He contended that Russia is instead seeking to prolong talks to evade making concessions. “They try to play with the president of the United States,” he said.

When asked if he believes Russia is playing a game, Zelenskyy responded: “Yeah, I think so. Yeah. He needs to delay any form of negotiations.”

Zelenskyy expressed Ukraine’s readiness to freeze the conflict at the current front lines, suggesting a ceasefire that would lead to talks. However, he firmly rejected a Russian demand for Ukraine to cede territory that its army has failed to seize after four years of combat.

The interview with Zelenskyy took place at his offices in Kyiv, a heavily fortified compound with dimmed lighting and sandbags lining the corridors. Amidst the imposing marble staircases and high ceilings, the walls are adorned with massive portraits of soldiers, each approximately 12 feet tall.

Speaking on the day after the war entered its fifth year, Zelenskyy acknowledged that war-weariness exists among some Ukrainians. But he argued that the peace proposals offered to date are disproportionately favorable to Russia.

“Everybody wants peace, and many people are tired,” Zelenskyy said. “But believe me, not everyone is prepared… to accept what Putin has prepared for us.”

The Ukrainian leader extended an invitation for President Trump to visit, stating: “He will witness the aftermath of the attacks. And he will see how the nation truly lives. Not merely surviving.”

Despite significant losses, Zelenskyy praised Ukraine’s resistance. “Russia was unable and remains unable to occupy us. They did not win, and for us, that is a victory. We defended our independence and freedom.

“They did not change our country. They did not change our flag.

“I am certain that Russia has recognized — truly recognizes now — that it was a grave mistake.”
