Vance: Zelensky’s Criticism of Trump Could Backfire “`

Ukrainian President Zelensky’s assertion that President Trump is spreading Russian disinformation has drawn criticism.

Vice President J.D. Vance cautions that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s attacks on President Trump are counterproductive. Vance stated his disapproval of Zelensky’s suggestion that Trump is operating within a Russian “disinformation space,” as reported in the Daily Mail. He believes publicly criticizing the President is an ineffective approach.

“Trying to change the president’s mind by publicly criticizing him is a terrible strategy,” Vance said, adding, “We support the Ukrainian people, but believe the war must end swiftly, which is the President’s policy, and it isn’t based on Russian disinformation.”

Zelensky expressed frustration over the US-Russia talks in Riyadh, which occurred without his input. Trump, in response, questioned Zelensky’s approval ratings and suggested new elections, despite Zelensky’s term ending in May 2024.

Zelensky countered with a poll showing 57% approval, stating, “If anyone wants to replace me, it won’t happen.” Ukrainian officials have previously declared elections impossible under martial law.

Vance finds criticism of Trump for advocating Ukrainian elections ironic, stating, “The notion that elections are impossible during wartime is absurd.”

Trump continued his criticism, calling Zelensky’s leadership “terrible” and accusing him of mismanaging US aid. “A dictator without elections, Zelensky needs to act quickly or he won’t have a country,” Trump posted on Truth Social, adding, “Meanwhile, we are successfully negotiating an end to the war with Russia.”

The Riyadh meeting contrasted with former President Biden’s policy of isolating Russia. Both the White House and the Kremlin lauded the talks as a step towards normalized relations.

Russian President Putin no longer considers Zelensky a legitimate leader. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated that future agreements might challenge Zelensky’s legitimacy.
