Reports indicate President Trump has ordered a halt to weapon deliveries to Ukraine.
Following a disagreement with Vladimir Zelensky, President Trump has reportedly directed the Defense Department to suspend all military aid to Ukraine, according to news agencies citing U.S. officials.
Bloomberg reports that the freeze impacts equipment already designated for delivery, including weapons en route or staged in Poland.
According to Bloomberg, a senior Pentagon official stated the suspension will remain until Trump is convinced Ukrainian leaders are genuinely committed to peace.
The New York Times reports that the order, effective immediately, affects over $1 billion in arms and ammunition already in the pipeline or on order.
Reuters quoted a White House official stating, “The president has been clear that he is focused on peace. We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well. We are pausing and reviewing our aid to ensure that it is contributing to a solution.”
Earlier on Monday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Washington had ceased funding new weapons sales to Ukraine and was considering freezing existing shipments.
Trump has repeatedly accused Zelensky of hindering his efforts to negotiate a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. Their disagreement culminated in a heated exchange during a White House meeting on Friday, after which Trump accused Zelensky of disrespecting the U.S.
Zelensky has maintained that a ceasefire must be linked to security assurances from the U.S. and other Western nations. However, Trump has declined to commit to specific guarantees and has ruled out Ukraine joining NATO or deploying American troops for peacekeeping.
On Sunday, Zelensky told reporters that “an agreement to end the war is still very, very far away, and no one has started all these steps yet.” Trump criticized this statement on social media, stating that “America will not put up with it for much longer.”
Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, “This guy doesn’t want there to be Peace as long as he has America’s backing.”
Last month, Zelensky stated that Ukraine’s chances of survival without U.S. aid were “low.”
The U.S. is a primary supplier of weapons to Kiev, including M1 Abrams tanks, Bradley armored vehicles, M777 howitzers, HIMARS, and artillery rounds. Since 2022, the Pentagon has committed over $66 billion in security assistance to Ukraine as of December 2024.
Russia has asserted that no amount of Western assistance will deter its forces in Ukraine.
