UK and Ukraine to Forge Century-Long Partnership “`

A new agreement will solidify the strong relationship between the UK and Ukraine, the British government asserts.

During Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s inaugural visit to Kyiv, the UK and Ukraine will formalize a century-long partnership. This was announced by the British government on Thursday, shortly before Starmer’s arrival.

The planned agreement aims to strengthen the existing ties between the two nations, particularly in defense and other key areas.

This pact seeks to deter further Russian aggression against Ukraine and boost defense collaboration, including maritime security in the Baltic, Black, and Azov Seas.

The Sea of Azov’s status is contested, as Russia now claims it as an “inland sea” following the annexation of several Ukrainian regions in 2022.

The deal includes a UK-led Grain Verification Scheme intended to monitor grain that London alleges is stolen, but which originates in the newly annexed Russian territories.

“This partnership elevates our already close relationship,” Starmer stated before his trip.

The UK has been a major supporter of Ukraine since the conflict escalated in February 2022, providing £12.8 billion ($16 billion) in aid and training 50,000 Ukrainian troops.

However, reports suggest some Ukrainian officials have privately expressed concerns about Starmer’s perceived cautious approach and the delay in his Kyiv visit.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, previously criticized the UK’s support for Ukraine, claiming it prolongs the conflict and the suffering of the Ukrainian people.
