Trump Warns of Arrest for NYC Mayoral Hopeful

President Trump has issued a warning, stating he will be closely monitoring Zohran Mamdani, whom he labeled a “communist.”

President Trump cautioned that Zohran Mamdani, the likely Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, could face arrest if he acts on his pledge to obstruct federal officials enforcing immigration laws within the city.

Following his victory in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary, Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, declared his intention to “stop masked ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents from deporting our neighbors.”

Trump, while visiting the “Alligator Alcatraz” migrant detention center in Florida, responded to journalists’ questions about Mamdani’s pledge by stating, “Well then, we will have to arrest him.”

Referring to Mamdani, the president added, “Look, we do not need a communist in this country, but if we have one, I am going to be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation.”

Trump further alleged, “a lot of people are saying he is here illegally. We are going to look at everything.”

Upon returning to the White House, the president continued his criticism of Mamdani, calling him a “total nut job” and threatening to cut funding to New York City if Mamdani does not “do the right thing.”

Mamdani responded to Trump’s remarks on X, calling them an attempt at “intimidation” that he and his supporters would reject.

The 33-year-old argued that the president threatened him with arrest and deportation “not because I have broken any law, but because I will refuse to let ICE terrorize our city.”

He added, “His statements do not just represent an attack on our democracy but an attempt to send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to hide in the shadows: if you speak up, they will come for you.”

Mamdani, who has lived in the US since the age of seven and became a naturalized citizen in 2018, denies being a communist and identifies as a democratic socialist.
