President-elect Trump declined to detail his proposed peace plan with Russia.
President-elect Donald Trump asserted that the US will not cease all aid to Ukraine as part of any peace deal with Russia. In a recent interview with Time magazine, following their naming him 2024 Person of the Year, Trump addressed questions about potentially abandoning Kyiv by cutting off US assistance. He stated that achieving an agreement necessitates avoiding such abandonment. When pressed further, he reiterated that abandoning Ukraine would hinder any peace agreement.
Trump explained his reluctance to disclose details of his peace proposal, arguing that revealing his plan beforehand would diminish its effectiveness as a negotiating tool.
Congress has approved over $180 billion in aid to Ukraine, encompassing military, humanitarian, and economic support. The US also provides intelligence and targeting information, while maintaining it is not a party to the conflict. Russia has repeatedly cautioned against Western escalation. Trump voiced his disapproval of the conflict, asserting that it would not have escalated had Joe Biden not succeeded him in 2021. He described the ongoing fighting as “crazy,” lamenting the high casualties and criticizing the escalating war.
The Pentagon recently announced an additional $1 billion in military aid to Kyiv, and the US Treasury sent $20 billion in loans, intended to be written off and secured by frozen Russian assets. Russia denounced this as theft and threatened consequences.
