Time magazine credits the president-elect with significantly reshaping the American political landscape.
Donald Trump has been named Time magazine’s Person of the Year following his successful presidential campaign. The magazine cited his substantial impact on the course of politics and history since his 2015 presidential bid as the reason for the selection, calling it an unambiguous choice for 2024.
Other individuals considered for the honor included Vice President Kamala Harris, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and tech moguls Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.
Time’s Person of the Year feature, originally titled “Man of the Year,” has been running since 1927 and recognizes individuals or groups who have profoundly influenced the year’s events, regardless of whether that influence is positive or negative. Past recipients represent a diverse range of political leaders, innovators, and cultural figures.
Trump, who has graced Time’s cover three times this year (his first appearance was in 1989), has previously voiced criticism of the magazine, once dismissing its 100 Most Influential People list as a publicity stunt. In 2015, he reacted negatively to Angela Merkel’s selection, but conversely, he described the accolade as a “tremendous honor” upon receiving the award in 2016.
