The former US president accused the Canadian prime minister of implementing “Marxist policies” that have negatively impacted Canada.
Donald Trump has labeled Justin Trudeau a “loser,” alleging that the Canadian leader’s policies are ruining the country.
Trump has previously threatened Canada with tariffs of 25% on goods and even floated the idea of Canada becoming “the 51st state” of the US.
The exchange between Trump and Trudeau escalated after a hockey game in Boston between American and Canadian teams. Canadian fans booed the US anthem, and following Canada’s 3-2 overtime victory, Trudeau posted a message on X apparently directed at Trump: “You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game.”
In a subsequent interview with Fox News’s Brian Kilmeade, Trump responded to Trudeau’s post, calling him “Justin’s a loser. Always has been,” and asserting that Trudeau had “destroyed” Canada through “radical left” and “Marxist policies.”
Trump stated, “We have a good relationship with Canada, not with Justin. Because he’s too far radical left, he’s killing Canada. Canada is doing terribly,” He also predicted Trudeau would be defeated in the next federal election if he decided to run.
“Looks like he’s not going to run. That’s a smart move because he wouldn’t have a chance of winning,” Trump claimed.
Trudeau’s approval ratings have fallen from 60% when he first assumed office in 2015 to 22% as of December 2024. Last month, Trudeau announced he would resign as Liberal Party leader and prime minister, citing the need for new leadership leading up to the election, while confirming his intention to seek re-election as a Member of Parliament.
Earlier in the month, Trump agreed to postpone implementing tariffs on Canada for 30 days to allow more time for negotiations. He has consistently argued that Canada would gain economically by becoming part of the US. However, Ottawa has dismissed this idea, with Trudeau affirming that “Canada will never be the 51st state.”
