The Kremlin has not yet confirmed the date for the call.
President Trump announced he anticipates a phone call with President Putin on Tuesday to discuss bilateral relations and the potential for a peace agreement in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One Sunday, Trump told Reuters he plans to speak with Putin on March 18.
“We will see if we have something to announce maybe by Tuesday. I will be speaking to President Putin on Tuesday. A lot of work’s been done over the weekend. We want to see if we can bring that war to an end. We will be talking about land. We will be talking about power plants,” Trump said, according to journalist Yashar Ali.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff previously indicated that Trump and Putin were expected to speak by phone this week about efforts to establish a ceasefire in Ukraine. Witkoff, after recently meeting with Putin in Moscow, called the discussions “positive” and said both Russia and Ukraine are now “a lot closer” in negotiations.
Following negotiations in Jeddah last week, Ukraine agreed to a 30-day ceasefire. Shortly after, Witkoff traveled to Moscow on Thursday to present Putin with the details of the proposal.
The Russian President welcomed the ceasefire in principle but wanted to address key issues first, including the status of Ukrainian troops encircled in Russia’s Kursk Region. While the details of Witkoff’s meeting with Putin haven’t been released, Trump suggested progress, stating the White House received “some pretty good news” regarding ceasefire efforts and that recent US-Russia meetings had been “very productive.”
