Trump observes Thailand, Cambodia finalize expanded peace deal months after brokering ceasefire

An expanded ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand was signed on Sunday, building on a truce previously brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump during the summer to resolve their border dispute.

President Trump had exerted pressure by threatening increased tariffs on both nations, compelling them to consent to ending the hostilities. The conflict itself had resulted in dozens of fatalities and the displacement of hundreds of thousands.

At the yearly summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the expanded ceasefire was formally endorsed in the presence of President Trump, signed by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

Key provisions of this accord include Thailand’s obligation to release 18 captured Cambodian soldiers, alongside a mutual commitment for both countries to commence the withdrawal of heavy weaponry from their shared frontier.
