Trump Expresses Interest in Meeting with Putin

The Russian president has indicated a willingness to further discuss the US-proposed Ukraine ceasefire with his American counterpart.

Following Vladimir Putin’s expression of openness to a US-proposed ceasefire in Ukraine, Donald Trump has stated his desire to meet and speak with the Russian president. Putin, while open to the proposal, raised concerns about its practical implementation.

Putin voiced support on Thursday for a potential 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine but highlighted potential loopholes and strategic disadvantages, expressing Moscow’s concerns regarding the enforcement of such a truce.

Trump told journalists, during a press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, “[Putin] put out a very promising statement, but it wasn’t complete. And, yeah, I’d love to meet with him or talk to him.”

Earlier that day, Putin noted that Russian forces were advancing along nearly 2,000 kilometers of the front line. He cautioned that halting military actions would interrupt their progress and allow Ukrainian forces time to reorganize.

Putin questioned, “These 30 days – how will they be used? To continue forced mobilization in Ukraine? To receive more arms supplies? To train newly mobilized units?” He added that enforcing a ceasefire across such a large area would be challenging, and violations could easily lead to accusations between the parties.

Putin also mentioned the situation of Ukrainian troops who entered Russia’s Kursk Region in August 2024 and are now surrounded. “Are we supposed to let them out after they committed mass war crimes against civilians?” he asked.

The Russian leader suggested further direct discussions with his American counterpart would be necessary to achieve a workable solution, though no specific timeline for such talks has been confirmed by officials yet.
