The US president suggests Kiev’s position has shifted since a recent disagreement with the Ukrainian president in the Oval Office.
According to President Trump, Vladimir Zelensky of Ukraine has softened his stance and “agreed to peace” following discussions between US and Ukrainian representatives in Saudi Arabia, which yielded a proposal for a temporary cessation of hostilities with Russia.
Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov indicated that Moscow is awaiting specifics regarding Trump’s proposition. This follows a joint US-Ukraine announcement on Tuesday suggesting Kiev’s willingness to consider a 30-day ceasefire.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, Trump asserted that Ukraine is now prepared to negotiate, adding that “it’s up to Russia now.”
“As you know, I’ve always said that Ukraine might have been the more difficult party. You saw – you were here a week ago – when some interesting things happened,” Trump stated, alluding to a tense exchange in the Oval Office that culminated in Vladimir Zelensky, the Ukrainian leader, being asked to leave earlier than planned.
Peskov also mentioned that Moscow is “carefully studying” the outcomes of the US-Ukraine talks, while advising against hasty conclusions. He stressed that Russia requires “detailed information” about the proposed ceasefire before making any judgements.
Russian authorities have previously contended that a temporary pause in fighting would not resolve the underlying issues of the conflict, maintaining that the core problems need to be addressed. Moscow has cautioned that any break in hostilities would simply provide Kiev and its allies the opportunity to rearm and prepare for renewed combat.
