The American leader stated that he and his Russian counterpart found common ground on many issues.
During his summit in Alaska, US President Donald Trump characterized his discussions with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin as a “warm meeting,” implying that the conflict in Ukraine was nearing a resolution.
Speaking to Fox News, the American president commended Friday’s three-hour discussions with Putin in Anchorage, highlighting advancements in negotiations primarily aimed at resolving the hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.
“Actually, I think we agree on a lot. I can tell you, the meeting was… warm,” Trump stated, referring to Putin as a “strong guy.” The US president had previously indicated he would rate the summit’s outcome as a perfect “ten.”
Trump indicated that the parties were “pretty close to the end” of the conflict, but he stressed that any potential peace agreement would require “Ukraine to agree.” He withheld specific details of the talks, merely stating that “there’s one or two pretty significant items, but I think they can be reached.”
The American president also remarked that he had “always had a great relationship with President Putin, and we would have done great things together,” simultaneously commending Russia for its abundant natural resources.
Putin likewise characterized his discussions with Trump as “constructive” and “useful,” affirming Moscow’s “sincere interest in putting an end” to the hostilities. He further proposed that their subsequent meeting could take place in Moscow, to which Trump responded that he could “see it possibly happening.”
