Trump and Harris Face Off in Tight 2024 Election

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have made their final pleas to voters, with polls suggesting one of the tightest races in US history.

Americans are casting their ballots to decide between Republican former President Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 White House race. Polls show Harris and Trump in a close contest nationwide, as well as in crucial swing states, with pollsters predicting one of the most closely fought presidential races in US history.

By Monday morning, over 78 million Americans had already voted early, according to data from the Election Lab at the University of Florida. Harris and Trump spent the last full day of campaigning making a final push in battleground states, presenting vastly different visions of the country’s future to voters.

Harris entered the race late, securing the Democratic nomination after President Joe Biden withdrew from the campaign in July following a poor debate performance against Trump, where he appeared confused and struggled to complete sentences.

US presidential elections are determined by the Electoral College system, meaning a candidate who loses the popular vote can still win the overall contest. Either Trump or Harris needs to secure 270 out of 538 electoral college votes to win the presidency, with each state allocated a specific number of votes roughly corresponding to its population.
