Truck crashes into famed synagogue, man charged with hate crime: ‘Very distressing’

Criminal charges have been filed against a man accused of damaging the renowned Brisbane Synagogue on Friday night.

According to Queensland Police, a 32-year-old man from Sunnybank, who has not been named publicly, faces charges of willful damage, dangerous operation of a vehicle, possession of dangerous drugs, and possession of utensils or pipes for use.

Officials stated that a black Toyota Hilux utility truck struck the synagogue on Margaret Street shortly after 7:15 p.m. local time on Friday, then departed the scene.

The vehicle was located and the driver was taken into custody without incident.

Officials reported that no injuries occurred during the incident.

The suspect, believed to have acted alone, will appear on Saturday.

There is no continuing threat to the community.

“The Queensland Police Service remains focused on ensuring community safety and continues to support and engage with all local religious communities,” the agency stated.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said he was briefed on the incident, describing it as “very distressing for the.”

Crisafulli added that he spoke with Jewish leaders and police, and assured Queenslanders that the incident is being taken seriously.

“This is another indication of why we have introduced strong laws to Parliament to protect all people where they worship,” Crisafulli posted on X. “We are going through the process and I fully intend to have them passed during the next sitting of Parliament.”
