Rescuers report that a skyscraper collapsed in Bangkok during construction, resulting in one death and 50 injuries.

A significant earthquake has struck Myanmar, causing widespread damage both within the country and in neighboring Thailand.

Emergency services have reported that a skyscraper under construction in Bangkok, Thailand, collapsed on Friday due to the earthquake, resulting in the death of one construction worker and injuries to 50 others. Authorities have stated that an unknown number of people are still trapped in the debris.

The US Geological Survey reports that the earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.7 and was centered northwest of Sagaing in central Myanmar, at a shallow depth of 10km. A 6.4-magnitude aftershock struck the same region shortly after.

Reuters reports that witnesses in Mandalay, Myanmar, observed several buildings collapsing due to the earthquake’s tremors.

An AFP journalist in Naypyidaw, south of Sagaing, reported cracks appearing in roads and pieces of ceilings falling from buildings.

Social media videos reportedly show damage caused by the earthquake in Mandalay, Myanmar’s former royal capital.

In Bangkok, Thailand, tremors shook skyscrapers, causing panic among residents and tourists who rushed outdoors.

A 30-story building under construction collapsed in Bangkok’s Chatuchak Park area, with damage reported elsewhere in the city.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has declared Bangkok “an emergency zone” and has directed local officials in other provinces to consider the earthquake “a national emergency.”

The China Earthquake Administration (CEA) reported that tremors were also felt in Yunnan province, in southwest China.
