South Korea’s data protection agency urged users to avoid the Chinese AI service DeepSeek while it undergoes a review to ensure compliance with local regulations.
South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission temporarily suspended DeepSeek, a popular AI service, pending a review of its data practices. The commission removed DeepSeek apps from app stores and blocked web access on Saturday. The ban will last until DeepSeek implements necessary changes to meet Korean law, according to Yonhap news agency.
Existing users can still access the app, but the commission strongly advises caution until the investigation concludes.
Because user data is routed through DeepSeek’s servers in China, concerns exist regarding data collection practices. Following the lead of various US and international entities that have restricted DeepSeek access, South Korea is the first nation to implement a nationwide ban pending an investigation.
Last month, South Korean authorities formally requested clarification on DeepSeek’s data handling practices, requiring the company to establish local representation and cooperate fully with the commission.
