Sniper Attack Kills Two US Firefighters

Authorities are looking for an armed individual who targeted emergency responders at a fire in Idaho.

On Sunday, two firefighters died in what seems to be an ambush while responding to a wildfire in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Officials stated that the shooter is still at large, and investigators are looking into the possibility that the fire was intentionally started to lure first responders.

Emergency teams were sent to Canfield Mountain, a well-known spot for hiking and biking, at around 1:30pm local time. The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office reported that gunfire was heard approximately 30 minutes later.

“We are unsure of the number of suspects present, as well as the number of casualties,” Sheriff Robert Norris told reporters. “We are currently under sniper fire.”

Norris indicated that the shooter appeared to be using a powerful rifle and hiding in difficult terrain. “I am hoping someone can get a clear shot and neutralize [the suspect], as they have not indicated any willingness to surrender,” he added.

Lieutenant Jeff Howard informed ABC News that authorities are investigating whether the fire was deliberately set to trap firefighters.

Civilians, including hikers, were observed fleeing the area. Norris cautioned that some individuals may be trapped between the fire and the sniper.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed that federal agents were dispatched to provide “tactical and operational support.” A police helicopter was sent to assist but was unable to land due to ongoing gunfire.

Idaho Governor Brad Little denounced the attack, describing it as a “heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters.”
