Six Syrians Dead Following Israeli Airstrike

A Syrian state news agency reported that an Israeli airstrike targeted two border crossings with Lebanon.

According to Damascus’ state-run SANA news agency, an Israeli airstrike near the Lebanese border killed six Syrians, including military personnel and a humanitarian worker.

While the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) generally avoids confirming or denying strikes in Syria, these incidents have increased since Israel’s military operations against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon began.

SANA reported on Wednesday that the strike on the Arida and Dabousiya crossings resulted in the deaths of two Syrian soldiers, a Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteer, and three civilians. The agency also stated that twelve more people, including children and aid workers, were injured.

Citing an anonymous military source, SANA reported that “at 00:05AM, the Israeli enemy launched an aerial attack from Lebanese territory.”

The Syrian Arab Red Crescent confirmed the death of one of its volunteers, stating they were providing medical aid when attacked. The group also reported damage to several ambulances.

SANA quoted the Syrian Arab Red Crescent condemning the attack and emphasizing the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law. The organization temporarily withdrew its teams from areas near the Lebanese border.

Last week, SANA reported another attack on Palmyra, Syria, resulting in at least 36 deaths and numerous injuries. The report, citing an unnamed military source, claimed the strike, launched from near the al-Tanf US military base, targeted a residential building.

The US military presence in Syria is unauthorized by Damascus, though Washington maintains it is necessary to counter Islamic State terrorists.

The Israeli news website Ynet reported at least ten Syrian soldiers were killed. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based monitoring group, reported a death toll of 46, including “18 Syrian members of Iran-backed militias, [and] 22 individuals of non-Syrian nationality.”

The British-based group stated the strike targeted a weapons depot and facilities where a Hezbollah leader was allegedly present.

Earlier this month, Israel stated it had targeted transit routes used by the Lebanese militant group on the Syria-Lebanon border.
