A tie-breaking vote by Vice President J.D. Vance secured Donald Trump’s choice for Secretary of Defense.
Pete Hegseth, a veteran and Fox News commentator, was confirmed as the next Pentagon chief on Friday following a 50-50 Senate vote.
Vice President Vance cast the deciding vote in favor of Hegseth’s appointment.
Three Republican senators—Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Mitch McConnell—voted against Hegseth, aligning with the Democratic senators.
Hegseth, author of a book advocating for a stronger “warrior culture,” has committed to enhancing military readiness and the prestige of service. During his confirmation hearing, he emphasized his focus on combat effectiveness, meritocracy, and preparedness.
President Trump described Hegseth as a “courageous and patriotic champion” of the administration’s “Peace through Strength” policy.
Hegseth’s nomination faced controversy, including allegations of sexual assault and excessive drinking, and questions about his governmental experience. He dismissed these accusations as unsubstantiated attacks on his character.
