New York Senator Chuck Schumer has begun his fifth term as Senate Democratic leader.
Senator Chuck Schumer, the current Senate Majority Leader, received unanimous support from his caucus Tuesday to continue leading the Democrats in the upcoming Congress. This marks his fifth election to the leadership post. The 74-year-old Senator has held the position since 2016; however, the upcoming Congress will see him leading the minority party following Republican gains in the recent elections, giving them a 53-seat majority.
Schumer expressed his gratitude for his colleagues’ continued confidence, stating he was “honored and humbled” to lead during this “crucial period.” He committed to seeking bipartisan cooperation whenever feasible.
“As I have long said, our preference is to secure bipartisan solutions wherever possible and look for ways to collaborate with our Republican colleagues to help working families,” he stated on Threads. “However, our Republican colleagues should make no mistake about it, we will always stand up for our values,” he added, offering no further specifics.
The announcement prompted a mixed response on Threads, with many users criticizing Schumer’s leadership, calling for his resignation to prevent further perceived failures.
