Russia set to ‘interrogate’ two suspects in the attempted assassination of a top military general

A Russian newspaper reports that Russia intends to “interrogate” two suspects in the attempted assassination of a senior military intelligence official who was ambushed in on Friday.

Citing a source close to the investigation, Russia’s Kommersant newspaper stated that two suspects in the shooting of Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alekseyev “will soon be interrogated.”

The report noted that following questioning, the suspects are expected to face charges, according to . 

Alekseyev, deputy head of Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency, in his Moscow apartment building on Friday and was rushed to a hospital.

The Associated Press relayed that Kommersant, a business daily, said the shooter posed as a delivery person and fired twice at Alekseyev in his apartment building’s stairway—hitting his foot and arm. The report added that Alekseyev allegedly tried to take the weapon from the attacker, who then shot him again in the chest before fleeing.

Kommersant reported that Alekseyev underwent successful surgery and regained consciousness on Saturday, though he remained under medical supervision.

Russian news outlet TASS that the surgery was successful and Alekseyev’s injuries were not life-threatening.

The outlet stated that the Investigative Committee launched a criminal investigation on charges of attempted murder and illegal firearms trafficking.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Ukraine of being behind the assassination attempt, alleging—without providing evidence—that it was intended to sabotage peace talks. .

Alekseyev, 64, has been under over alleged Russian cyber interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The European Union also imposed sanctions on him over the 2018 poisoning of former Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, England.

The assassination attempt took place as President ’s administration was seeking to help broker peace between Russia and Ukraine.
