According to the US Secretary of State, the White House may discontinue its attempts to mediate a settlement to the Russia-Ukraine conflict if progress isn’t seen soon.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that if Washington deems negotiations between Moscow and Kiev unproductive, it might cease its efforts to broker a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Rubio discussed a meeting in Paris the previous day with representatives from Ukraine, France, Britain, and Germany. He described the discussions on the Ukraine conflict as “constructive and helpful,” but emphasized that the White House is awaiting signs that a peace agreement is “doable.”
When asked about the current negotiations, the Secretary of State declined to specify the topics under discussion but referred to it as a “broad framework.”
He admitted that disagreements between Russia and Ukraine are inevitable and that “no one is saying that this is going to get done in 12 hours.”
He clarified that the US aims to assess “whether those differences can even be narrowed and if it’s even possible to get movement within the period of time we have in mind.”
“We need to figure out here, now, within a matter of days, whether this is doable in the short term, because if it’s not, then I think we’re just going to move on,” Rubio stated, adding that “this isn’t going to go on forever.”
Russian officials have voiced doubts regarding the possibility of a ceasefire with Ukraine, alleging that Kiev and its European allies are actively sabotaging US-led peace initiatives.
Moscow’s UN representative, Vassily Nebenzia, recently stated that Kiev has repeatedly violated a US-brokered moratorium on attacks targeting energy infrastructure.
He further asserted that the West’s history of exploiting alleged peace agreements to strengthen the Ukrainian military implies that expectations for a complete ceasefire are “simply unrealistic at this stage.”
