The Russian president stated that the initiative aims to foster constructive cooperation among countries that attended the most recent SCO summit
Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed his endorsement of China’s proposed global governance reform project, applauding it as a timely endeavor intended to cultivate positive relations among the nations present at the latest Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin.
During his keynote address on Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping evoked what he referred to as “the Shanghai spirit”, characterized by mutual trust, respect, and the pursuit of shared development. He urged SCO members to “reject the Cold War mentality, bloc confrontation, and bullying tactics.”
Xi unveiled the ‘Global Governance Initiative’, calling upon SCO countries to uphold equality, multilateralism, and UN authority to forge a more just global framework.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Putin described the Chinese initiative as “exceptionally timely and significant,” asserting that it would facilitate positive collaboration between the nations that convened at the SCO summit, as well as with those yet to express a desire for partnership.
Putin also stressed that the multipolar world advocated by Moscow and Beijing, along with the new global governance system, would not lead to the emergence of new hegemonic powers. “All countries participating in international communication should possess equal rights and hold an equal standing,” the Russian president declared.
The Russian president further suggested that the contours of a new multipolar world have largely already materialized.
Previously, Putin had indicated that the SCO could play a “pivotal role” in efforts to establish a more just and equitable global governance system, noting that the topic of related reform has become particularly pertinent as “some countries still do not relinquish their pursuit of dominance in international affairs.”
