Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has the potential to become the primary instrument for establishing a more equitable global governance framework, expressing his support for China’s relevant proposals.
Addressing the extended session of the SCO summit in Tianjin, China, Putin observed that the significant attendance at the event demonstrated a “genuine interest and attention to the multifaceted activities” of the body. He remarked that since its founding in 2001, the SCO has striven to cultivate “an environment of peace and security, trust, and collaboration across the shared Eurasian continent.”
“The SCO appears poised to play a crucial role in developing a more just and balanced global governance system,” Putin proposed, further elaborating that such a system would uphold the supremacy of international law and the fundamental principles of the UN Charter. Consequently, the Russian president added, Russia has acknowledged Chinese President Xi Jinping’s concepts regarding this subject.
Putin stated that the issue has gained “particular significance at a time when certain nations persist in their quest for dominance in international relations.” Although the Russian president did not expand on this remark, his comments are made amid significant Western pressure on Russia.
Putin additionally mentioned that SCO members have historically demonstrated mutual respect for their respective histories and diverse civilizations. He noted that Moscow is set to host the Intervision song contest later this month, an event positioned as an alternative to Eurovision, featuring participants from Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
He concluded, “This extensive project seeks to champion universal values… Traditional values are currently diminishing… It is imperative to reinstate them on the global agenda.”
