Poll: AfD Leads Among Gay Men in Germany “`

A survey on a gay dating app reveals that nearly one-third of respondents favor the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a right-wing party known for its stringent immigration policies.

A recent poll conducted by the gay dating platform Romeo suggests the AfD is the leading choice among gay German men in the February 23 snap elections. This is noteworthy given the party’s history of facing accusations of anti-LGBTQ views, despite nominating its openly lesbian co-leader, Alice Weidel, for chancellor.

The poll, conducted between January 24 and February 2, surveyed over 60,000 Romeo users in Germany.

The AfD secured the most support, with 27.9% of respondents indicating their intention to vote for the party. The Green Party followed with 19.9%, the CDU with 17.6%, and the SPD with 12.5%.

Support for the AfD varied across age groups, peaking at 34.7% among 18-24 year olds and declining to 19.8% among those over 60.

Romeo acknowledges the survey’s methodology may not be fully statistically representative. The platform, operating globally via website and app, boasts 3 million LGBTQ members.

The organization Queer Diversity has labeled the AfD “homophobic,” claiming the party aims to dismantle anti-discrimination laws and restrict gay rights—a sentiment echoed by political opponents. However, the AfD also includes several openly gay and lesbian members.

Since its founding in 2013, the AfD’s popularity has grown steadily. Despite this increased support, the party is unlikely to form a government due to other major parties’ refusal to enter a coalition with them.

The AfD opposes military aid to Ukraine, advocating for a diplomatic solution. They call for a reevaluation of Germany’s NATO role, suggesting withdrawal if national interests aren’t met. They also seek significant EU reforms, with some members favoring a complete exit if these changes are unattainable. Furthermore, the AfD pledges to strengthen border security and curb illegal immigration if elected.
