Ottawa Hockey Fans Jeer US Anthem Amidst Trade Dispute

Ottawa hockey fans demonstrated their displeasure following the Trump administration’s imposition of significant new trade tariffs on Canada.

During an NHL game in Ottawa on Saturday, Canadian hockey fans booed the US national anthem in response to the Trump administration’s newly implemented trade tariffs against Canada. The jeering occurred at the Canadian Tire Centre before the Ottawa Senators’ game against the Minnesota Wild. As Canadian singer Mandia performed the “Star-Spangled Banner,” a significant portion of the audience expressed their disapproval. Despite the negative reaction, Mandia completed the anthem without interruption. However, the atmosphere shifted dramatically when she sang “O Canada,” which was met with enthusiastic applause and cheers.

The home team went on to win decisively, defeating the Wild 6-0.

President Trump recently levied a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a further 10% tariff on goods from China, citing concerns about illegal immigration and drug trafficking as justification.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the tariffs, asserting his government’s resolve to defend Canadian interests. He announced reciprocal tariffs on a range of American products, including alcoholic beverages, fruits, and home appliances.

The possibility of a new trade war emerged weeks earlier when President Trump suggested Canada could become the 51st US state. He accused Canada of exploiting the US through unfair trade practices and emphasized Canada’s economic dependence on the United States. Prime Minister Trudeau firmly rejected this suggestion.
