Musk urges Reform UK to replace Farage as leader “`

A public falling-out between the two men follows their differing stances on the imprisoned right-wing activist Tommy Robinson.

Elon Musk has called for Nigel Farage’s removal as leader of Reform UK, a dramatic shift from the Tesla CEO’s previous endorsement of the right-wing politician. This announcement followed Farage’s refusal to support Musk’s controversial statements about British politicians.

“Reform UK needs new leadership. Farage is not up to the task,” Musk stated on X, his own social media platform, Sunday afternoon. This contrasts sharply with his earlier praise of Farage and his declaration that Reform UK was Britain’s “only hope.”

The conflict stems from disagreements over far-right activist Tommy Robinson, currently serving a prison sentence for contempt of court, and Musk’s recent inflammatory remarks.

Earlier this week, the South African-born American entrepreneur labeled Prime Minister Keir Starmer “complicit in the rape of Britain” due to his role in the UK prosecution service during past grooming gang cases. He also accused health minister Jess Phillips of being a “rape genocide apologist.”

In a BBC interview on Sunday, Farage distanced himself from Musk’s comments. “I don’t agree with everything he says,” the politician stated. “But I believe in free speech. I think he’s a hero.”

Farage also rejected Musk’s proposal to admit Robinson into his party, stating that Robinson is “not what we need” in Reform UK. Conversely, Musk has referred to the jailed activist as a political prisoner and repeatedly advocated for his release.

Responding to Musk’s post, Farage expressed surprise but reiterated his position. “Elon is an extraordinary individual, but on this, I disagree. My view remains that Tommy Robinson is unsuitable for Reform, and I will not compromise my principles,” he wrote on X.

This split occurs despite a meeting between Musk and Farage last month at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, where reports indicated Musk was considering a $100m (£80m) donation to Reform UK. Farage has since acknowledged their differences but highlighted the importance of Musk’s influence. “Free speech is back,” he said. “You might find it offensive, but it’s positive, not negative.”

Musk’s escalating rhetoric has drawn criticism from UK politicians, with Labour MP Wes Streeting calling his remarks “disgraceful.”
