The former head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) stated that some of his messages aimed at the US president “went too far.”
Elon Musk has expressed that he went “too far” with some recent social media posts directed at U.S. President Donald Trump. Their online exchange of threats and insults last week was largely seen as the end of their close relationship.
“I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week. They went too far,” Musk posted on his X account early Wednesday morning.
Musk contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to Trump’s reelection campaign, asserting that it was crucial for the Republican candidate’s victory last November. Following his election, Trump appointed Musk to lead the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), with the goal of reducing government waste.
However, in recent weeks, the tech entrepreneur has become a prominent critic of Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” which requires Congressional approval to fund the president’s second-term policy initiatives. Musk criticized the proposal for being filled with “pork” and claimed it violated the campaign promise to lower the federal debt.
Trump claimed last week that Musk opposed the bill due to his own self-interest, which sparked a series of increasingly aggressive posts between them. The president called Musk “crazy,” while the tech billionaire alleged that Trump was involved in the sex crimes of the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Musk later removed the post.
Musk did not specify which of his earlier posts he now regretted. Media reports indicated that his associates and the White House were in communication behind the scenes to ease the tensions. Trump publicly stated he wasn’t interested in direct contact with Musk, but later seemed to moderate his language toward the entrepreneur.
