Elon Musk asserts that the number of Social Security recipients surpasses the US population.
Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has leveled accusations of massive fraud against the US Social Security Administration (SSA).
Musk recently claimed that his department’s preliminary Social Security data review revealed payments to individuals listed as over 150 years old, and many recipient entries lacked identifying details.
In a recent X post, Musk stated that the number of “eligible” social security numbers exceeds the US population, citing a post indicating 394,943,364 recipients versus a US population of 334 million.
“This might be the biggest fraud in history,” Musk concluded.
Musk alleges that thousands of individuals, some purportedly over 150 years old, remain listed as alive in SSA records.
“According to the Social Security database, these are the numbers of people in each age bucket with the death field set to false!” Musk wrote.
“Maybe Twilight is real and there are a lot of vampires collecting Social Security,” he added, referencing the “Twilight” series.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), established by Trump to streamline federal operations and cut $2 trillion in federal spending by 2026, is overseen by Musk. Musk has acknowledged that up to $1 trillion in cuts might be achievable.
Since President Trump’s inauguration, DOGE—despite its name, not a permanent federal department—has implemented substantial cuts, including dismantling USAID and the CFPB, and imposing strict limitations on NIH grants as part of its efficiency drive.
