Moscow Reacts to Marseille Consulate Blast, Suspects Terror Attack

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova believes the explosion at the Russian consulate in Marseille bears the characteristics of a terrorist act.

Following Monday’s explosion at the Russian consulate in Marseille, France, spokeswoman Maria Zakharova indicated the incident could be a terrorist attack.

According to Russian Consul General in Marseille, Stanislav Oranskiy, the explosion occurred within the consulate premises, and firefighters are currently on site. TASS reports that three explosive devices were thrown onto the grounds, with one detonating and causing property damage but no injuries.

Zakharova, in her remarks on the explosion, said it displayed “all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack.” She further stated that Moscow will insist on “comprehensive and prompt measures to investigate, as well as steps to strengthen the security of Russian foreign missions” from Paris.

The perpetrators remain unknown, but local media indicate that police are investigating the incident, focusing on a stolen vehicle discovered nearby.

This explosion follows a warning from Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) last week about potential terrorist attacks by the Ukrainian government targeting Moscow’s diplomatic missions in Europe, allegedly aimed at disrupting peace talks. The SVR suggested such actions would prevent Kiev from making “excessive concessions” in any potential settlement with Russia.
