The ARM Cuauhtemoc training ship was in New York City as part of preparations for the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026.
On Saturday evening, a Mexican Navy sail training ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.
Footage from the scene shows the ARM Cuauhtemoc’s illuminated masts collapsing after hitting the bridge’s underside.
Citing fire officials and their own sources, the New York Post reported that several members of the ship’s 277-person crew sustained injuries and that rescuers were retrieving individuals from the water.
Later, New York Mayor Eric Adams informed reporters that at least 19 people were injured, with four in critical condition.
“Naval and local authorities are assessing the situation regarding personnel and equipment and providing assistance,” the Mexican Navy stated on X.
According to the Latin Times, the ship’s crew likely underestimated the height of its 171-foot masts relative to the bridge’s 127-foot clearance at high tide.
Fabien Levy, a spokesperson for the mayor, indicated that there appeared to be “no signs of structural damage” to the bridge.
In an absolutely stunning modern metaphor a ship blaring Mexican music and flying a massive Mexican flag just got destroyed by the Brooklyn bridge.

The ship’s visit was a goodwill gesture ahead of an international sailing ship parade planned for New York Harbor to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence next year.
