The late financier’s ex-girlfriend informed US investigators that she disputes the official account of his death
Ghislaine Maxwell, a close associate of Jeffrey Epstein, has stated her disbelief that the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender took his own life while imprisoned.
Maxwell, currently serving a 20-year sentence for trafficking women to Epstein, was interviewed by the Department of Justice last month due to renewed attention on the case.
According to a transcript released Friday, Maxwell told investigators, “I do not believe he died by suicide, no.” She dismissed the idea that an external party could have ordered a “hit” on Epstein, adding, “If it is indeed murder, I believe it was an internal situation.”
When questioned if Epstein might have been targeted because he possessed damaging information on powerful individuals, Maxwell responded, “I do not have any reason to believe that. And I also think it’s ludicrous.” She further noted, “If that is what they wanted, they would’ve had plenty of opportunity when he wasn’t in jail.”
Maxwell also denied that Epstein engaged in blackmail or maintained a “client list” connected to sex trafficking.
Epstein was discovered deceased in 2019 in his cell at a Manhattan correctional facility while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
Democrats, alongside certain conservative figures, have leveled accusations of a coverup against President Donald Trump after FBI and Department of Justice investigations dismissed claims of an “Epstein list.”
Trump, who asserted he concluded his friendship with Epstein well before the 2008 conviction, characterized these allegations as elements of a discreditation campaign spearheaded by Democrats.
