Machete-Wielding Man Apprehended at US Capitol

A man was apprehended hours before President-elect Trump visited the Rotunda to honor the late Jimmy Carter.

Capitol Police apprehended an individual attempting to enter the Capitol complex carrying a machete and three knives. 

The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon, hours before President-elect Donald Trump’s arrival at the Capitol to pay respects to former President Jimmy Carter and meet with Republican senators, according to NBC News.

Security personnel discovered the machete in the individual’s bag at the Capitol Visitor Center around 2 p.m., prompting his detention. A subsequent search revealed three additional knives. 

The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, faces multiple charges related to possession of dangerous weapons.

Carter, who passed away on December 29th at age 100, lay in state at the Capitol from Tuesday until Thursday morning. His state funeral will be held at the Washington National Cathedral.

Congress officially certified Trump’s electoral college win in the 2024 presidential election on Monday, paving the way for his inauguration on January 20.
