Authorities say a car ramming into pedestrians in the UK that injured nearly 50 people is not considered terrorism.
Merseyside Police have stated that the Monday incident in Liverpool, where a car drove into a crowd of football fans injuring at least 47, is not being treated as a terrorist attack.
The vehicle drove through the Liverpool Football Club’s Premier League victory parade on Water Street in the city center. Police have detained the driver, a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.
Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims told reporters at a press conference on Monday evening, “It is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media.”
Sims stated, “We believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it. The incident is not being treated as terrorism.”
Local emergency services reported that 20 individuals were treated at the scene, and 27 were hospitalized, including two with serious injuries. Four children were among those injured.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the police and emergency services for their “remarkable bravery.”
He said in a statement, “Everyone, especially children, should be able to celebrate their heroes without this horror. Liverpool stands together and the whole country stands with Liverpool.”
