Jordan Reportedly Suggests Exile for Hamas Leaders from Gaza

Fighting between Israel and Hamas restarted on March 18.

According to the Middle East Eye, citing US and Palestinian sources, Jordan has suggested exiling 3,000 Hamas militants and leaders from Gaza.

The proposal also includes disarming Hamas and other groups in Gaza, potentially allowing the Palestinian Authority, based in the West Bank, to govern the territory.

The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas broke down earlier in March, with both sides blaming each other for the failure to reach an agreement for the second phase of the truce.

The IDF has been conducting airstrikes in Gaza since March 18 and has retaken key areas in the central part of the region.

Defense Minister Israel Katz has threatened to annex parts of Gaza if Hamas does not release the remaining hostages.

In February, former US President Donald Trump proposed resettling Palestinians and turning Gaza into a US-owned “Riviera of the Middle East.” Arab nations rejected this idea and supported Egypt’s plan to rebuild Gaza without displacing its residents.

Egyptian media reported that Egypt considered temporarily moving half a million Palestinians from Gaza to northern Sinai, but Cairo denied discussing any resettlement plans.

Since Israel’s military operation began in response to the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, over 50,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza.

During the ceasefire that began on January 19, Hamas released 25 hostages and the remains of eight others in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinians released from Israeli prisons, according to the AP.
