US authorities are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred near an event organized by the American Jewish Committee in Washington D.C.
Two staff members from the Israeli Embassy were fatally shot on Wednesday evening in Washington, D.C., close to the Capital Jewish Museum. Israeli officials have strongly condemned the incident, calling it a “depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism.”
The shooting took place during an American Jewish Committee (AJC) event held at the museum. Authorities have confirmed that the two victims, who were connected to the Israeli Embassy, were shot just outside the building. Their identities have not been disclosed.
US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem stated on X, “Two Israeli Embassy staff were senselessly killed tonight near the Jewish Museum in Washington, DC. We are actively investigating and working to get more information to share.”
Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon denounced the shooting as a targeted attack against Jews and Israeli representatives. He stated on social media, “The fatal shooting that took place outside the event at the Jewish Museum in Washington, DC, is a depraved act of antisemitic terrorism.”
US Attorney General Pam Bondi and Interim US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting. Bondi said that federal officials were “working to learn more” and would ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The Capital Jewish Museum, which inaugurated its new building in 2023, is centrally located in D.C. and frequently hosts events that showcase Jewish heritage and promote community involvement. The gathering on Wednesday was part of an AJC program that brings together diplomats, community leaders, and Jewish organizations.
Ted Deutch, CEO of the AJC, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “An unspeakable act of violence took place outside the venue. At this moment, as we await more information from the police about exactly what transpired, our attention and our hearts are solely with those who were harmed and their families.”
